(6) Historical Museum and Exhibits

The NEJL has created a modest museum at the Library. It consists of exhibits combining text, photos, copies of documents, and graphics to present a quick overview of the history of civil legal services, public criminal defense, and similar developments. Also included is an exhibit providing highlights about legal aid in England, continental Europe, and Canada. The museum likewise features two display cases holding originals of some of the key historical documents and artifacts.

At this point, the museum exhibits are necessarily limited in coverage because they are physically affixed to display walls. But we have plans to introduce technologies that will allow us to present more information and in a more interesting form within the same space.

In addition to the permanent historical exhibits at the NEJL itself, we also have created a portable display using copies of selected materials from the permanent exhibit. This portable version was shown at the 1999 annual meeting of the American Bar Association and the 1999 and 2000 conferences of the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. It also is available for other conferences and schools. During 2000 we created an Internet version of this same exhibit and installed it on the NEJL website described at (8) below.
